Feature Image: Kanye West “Runaway” Music Video

Kanye West’s new album “WAVES” (or whatever he ends up calling it) comes out this week! I’m pretty excited for some new Yeezy. He’s my favorite rappers. Not does he keep me wondering what he will come out with next…I hang on to every word he has to say whether it be inspiring, ridiculous, or just funny.

I think behind all the controversy…he’s a genuinely nice guy who just wants to inspire people with his music and be proud of what he leaves behind. “If you’re a fan of Kanye West, You’re a fan of yourself…” – Kanye West.

And with that…I wanted to rank all of his releases leading up to his newest which I can’t wait to hear! Also, check out a special episodes of Stage Banter this week: All About Kanye!

6. The College Dropout (2004)

Top Tracks: All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Through the Wire

I was aware of the album but I hade to revisit it. I think it has some really strong songs/singles that really defined him at the time…but as an overall album it’s not as strong. I didn’t consider myself a fan at this point…but again I was only 12 years old when it came out!

5. Late Registration (2005)

Top Tracks: Gold Digger, Touch the Sky

The album I feel that really put him on everyone’s radar. Gold Digger was such a huge song that still holds up! I remember seeing that music video all the time and I’m pretty sure it was the ringtone on my Motorolla Razr.

4. 808’s and Heartbreak (2008)

Top Tracks: RoboCop, Welcome to Heartbreak, Say You Will, Heartless

This album changed the game! I feel like everyone wanted to sound like Kanye after this..they wanted to look like him…and even wanted to make fun of him! It opened up the door for rappers like Kid Cudi, B.O.B., Childish Gambino and even Drake. People give it a hard time because of the use of “auto-tune” but it was more than that! Still jams 8 years later.

3. Yeezus (2013)

Top Tracks: Bound 2, Black Skinhead, Blood on the Leaves

I’ll admit…aside from “Bound 2”, I wasn’t feeling this album at first. But after seeing him perform these songs live…IT MADE SENSE! Seriously. He’s one of the best live performers I’ve seen. Ominous, confident, and sometimes a little scary (set design). But also, he knows what the people want and still plays the hits! Yeah, this album is waaaaay different and unexpected. But it made a statement! Who else could put out an album like this???

2. Graduation (2007)

Top Tracks: GOOD LIFE, Homecoming, Can’t Tell Me Nothing, Good Morning

It’s a classic. There’s nothing wrong with it. The album I come back to the most. The Good Life is probably my favorite Kanye song of all time. If someone was trying to get into his music…I’d tell them to start here. It’s upbeat, poppy, but has an undeniable flow. Put it on when you’re driving around…it’s golden.

1. My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy (2010)

Top Tracks: Devil in a New Dress, Dark Fantasy, All of the Lights, Runaway.

Favorite Lyric: “Too many Urkels on ya team, that’s why you’re wins low.

Kanye was at a peak of creativity here. There was so much style surrounding this album. Everything from the artwork, music videos, SNL performances to the beats and lyrics. I mean he put out a short film along with this album! Lots of great features (Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Rick Ross, John Legend)…so many more reasons why it tops my list. But let’s see how it ranks after WAVES…
